The Michigan Messenger: Fight for the soul of Michigan’s highest court

chetlyzarko · 1 year agoWhat about all the money - and even ballot initiative to change the court make up - that the MDP, unions, and other entities promised ($10 M "according to some reports") early on to take Taylor out. You may have a case for changing the way Supreme Court elections occur, or even if election is the appropriate vehicle, but this piece is hardly a fair exposition of that case (which would be powerfully expressed if the story pointed out the funding issues on both sides, because you might win some converts). It's a philosophical battle backed by large money because its an important position that is elected - I don't begrudge the unions or MDP their right to spend money against Taylor because they can and its their right, but this story makes it out to seem that only Republican money is bad or corrupting (if the unions or MDP buy Taylor's defeat, and he will be heavily outspent it appears, you'll get a judge as beholden and extreme in the opposite direction). If you've got a problem with money in court elections, propose changing the system (appointees, structural changes, etc.).
