The Michigan Messenger: Media Bias

  • LiberalLucy · 2 years ago
It's too bad that we can't vote for more than three. I had to trade Dawson Bell for Beckmann, but Ballenger and Finley are just a hair worse than Bell and Beckmann, so either way you slice it, they're all too far right for both their and their reading/listening audiences own good.

Choices are tough Thanks for your input. LL. I think Mr. Beckman is an easy choice. I listened to his show on the WJR during the budget fiasco, and he sounded so much like a Bill O wannabe it was ridiculous. I wonder what his position is on loofahs and sexually harassing employees. He says he's looking out for us, and that's a scary thought. I really wonder if he honestly believes he's really "fair and balanced."

You forgot Chris Christoff His news pieces come accross like editorials, oh wait your only trying to expose Republican bias, not Democrat bias.  Actual most the people on your list are commentators not journalist who are supposed to have an opinion.

Bias would be related specifcally to those who's job it is to report not opine.  Under that criteria your list would be very short which says something about the amount of reporters covering the capitol these days.

My most bias list would go Chris Christoff, Dawson Bell and thats about it, blame the Free Press for allowing their writers to air their opinions then limiting them to just reporting.

Commentators Beckman is a logical, he is the lead in to Rush and Hannety, the longer WJR goes the worse it gets and now it looks like the guy who was kicked off MSNBC is coming on WJR.  Well at least they have them all in one place.  JR use to be one of my favorite stations and then it went to hay in a hand basket.

Thank you Thank you so much for you comments, Mr. Fawkes. I am taking your comment as a write-in vote for Mr. Chris Christoff.

I don't agree with you, but really, that's one of the main goals of Michigan Messenger; to foster debate and discussion. I suppose I could be a bit of a smart aleck and say that according to the right all of the media is liberal anyway, so it makes no sense to single anyone out. However, that's simply not true. I also disagree that the people on the list are not journalists. However, you are correct that there is a lack of reporters covering the Capitol. MIRS and Gongwer do an excellent job of covering the Capitol, but they do not byline their stories. I place a lot more trust in something when I know who to go to when there is a mistake. I think something that is overlooked is the job bloggers have done covering Lansing, and they have picked up the slack in covering the Capitol. I think that was demonstrated during the all-night budget sessions.

Welcome Livingston County and Green Oak Township Welcome to MM Sally; I'm so glad you found us. Can I get a shout out for Livingston County and Green Oak Township. You are 100 percent correct about WJR.. I will never understand how the most powerful radio station in the state located in a blue state in one of the most liberal cities in America does not have one single non-conservative voice. I might listen to Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hanity if there was something before or after their show I actually wanted to listen to. As it is now, I have no reason at all to go to WJR, and it is no longer in the presets of my car radio.

WJR was once one of my favorite stations too, back when it had the Lions, Tigers, Pistons and J.P. McCarthy. Back when I was in the Navy and would drive home on leave once a year I knew I was getting close when I picked up WJR. I once picked up WJR and Ernie Harwell doing a Tiger's game one night on the eastern shore of Maryland while driving from Virginia to NYC.

Bias Works Both Ways... My votes from the selections were Finley, Ballenger, and Beckmann.

However, we liberals do have our own biased commentators/journalists. Three examples include:

    1.  Chad Selewski of the Macomb Daily (wish he'd resign from that right leaning paper and work PR/Media for the MDP).

    2.  Mitch Albom (needs to leave WJR for 1310AM and start a local progressive talk show).

    3.  Laura Berman of the News (she should give up Feature and do Liberal Political commentary, possibly a Blog).

    Anyway, that's my thoughts...

Liberal bias Thanks for your input, Joe. I agree bias cuts both ways, but it seems all we hear about is the "liberal media" political strategy.

I have never heard of Chad Selewski, so I cannot talk about him. If Mitch Albom left WJR al there would be nothing but conservative voices. I do not consider Mitch Albom a liberal commentator. He is one of the best and most well known sports reporters in the country. When was the last time Sean Hanity or Rush Limbaugh talked about the new Lions coach or the Tigers chance to get in the playoffs? Laura Berman is strictly a columnist, but unlike Nolan Finely, she does not drive the positions of the editorial page.

Murray Feldman Most people don't know about Feldman because he's a reporter for Fox 2 in Detroit.  The guy has been using the news' website as a way to publish his views against Granholm.  Then he'll get people to comment on the blog, where the same guys from Freep will jump in to comment.  He will, of course, only air those comments on the air.

Freep? Thanks for stopping in and commenting, dj.  Could you clarify the identity of "Freep"?  Many of our readers may not be able to distinguish "Freep" between the Detroit Free Press, the Free Republic website, or the Free Press website.

    Great to see you here!
