In fact, I have seen more activity along Talmadge Creek in the past couple months (Jan. & Feb.2012) than I have seen in the past year (2011).
Something is amiss, and the Public is not being informed.
Damn It.
There has been a LOT of activity going on along Talmadge Creek. I think they have been mandated by the EPA to dig up & replace a LOT of soil along the creek & lately I've seen them filtering the creek water. I'm not sure what for, but when I called Enbridge,
I was told it was just "ongoing remediation pracftices." I can't believe the BC Enquirer has not repotrted on this & frankly, I cannot believe that you have not reported on this either. Our water system is f**ked and nobody sems to care.
These Oil & Energy Companies CANNOT be allowed to do as they please or they will ruin our environment & I do not want that for my bay boy.
WHERE is the media coverage? WHERE?
I Have a baby child. I do NOT want my baby to grow up in a world where energy companies do what they want with no media watchdog.

Where is the BC Enquirer? Where is the Michigan Messenger?
Come On guys.

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

http://youtu.be/zIQ-HuCOfS4 This is Jessie Ventura's expose on the sale of Michigan's Fresh Water to Nestle' for pennies. To be bottled and sold back to the people or to China by the barge full. Please SHARE with the people and try get the National Resources Defense Council involved.

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

that is a huge thing.adaptive motion trainer

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

That is a huge thing.

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

Let's get in contact with,Rev. Or maybe anyone who has no clout or power that he and his minions can walk all over if fair game. Michigan we can't let this happen. Protest! Fight back anyway you can in a non-violent way. We need to get National media attention. I worry however that our media is being taken over by the Big Money Corporations. My local newspaper certainly isn't giving me any info. For the best news I have to go to MSNBC. Regular news channels aren't very informative. We have to dig for the truth and people and the big corporate machine want it that way. An ignorant populace is much easier to manipulate. I worry that the everyday working person has no idea how bad our government really is. Michigan is no longer operating under a democracy it is a Dictatorship. Thanks for this story on Catherine Fergurson Academy.. I saw a story on it tonight on the Rachael Maddow Show on MSNBC.

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

Please have Eartha report on this on Detroit- I just found it at Dem Underground by Madfloridian in her Journal. It really pissed me off. Teen parenting school will become a charter.
Posted by madfloridian in General Discussion
Wed Apr 20th 2011, 01:05 AM
This is how the Emergency Financial Managers like Robert Bobb work. Quickly and without mercy. He seems to have been given complete power over Detroit's schools, even though a judge say he could not control academics.

He has said that this school for pregnant and parenting teens must be closed and turned into a charter. He has that power now.

From a Daily Kos blog today:

EFM Takeover Of Detroit Schools: Teen Mothers Arrested, Children taken Into Temporary Custody

Approximately a dozen teachers, teen mothers and their children were arrested and taken away by Detroit police while staging a peaceful sit-in protest at the Catherine Ferguson Academy in Detroit on Friday April 15th. Eight students, along with their children and some faculty members of the Catherine Ferguson Academy of Detroit, MI began the sit-in at the end of the school day in protest to Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb’s announcement to close the school for pregnant and parenting teens. The decision to occupy was made after many other attempts by students, staff and supporters to have their voices heard by EFM Robert Bobb through letter writing and petition campaigns, to no avail.

The protestors were told by police that they were trespassing and the building needed to be closed. The peaceful occupiers refused to leave and many were brought out in handcuffs. It has been reported by local news that “Some struggled, some screamed, all were put in squad cars and hauled away", while many more protestors and supporters outside watched in shock. The students themselves say they did not resist arrest. One told local reporters, "We just stood there and they just arrested us one by one ."

..."On the heels of the shocking announcement last month by Detroit Public Schools Emergency Financial Manager (EFM) Robert Bobb to close up to eight schools and sell up to 45 schools to charter companies, he slated the highly successful and unique Catherine Ferguson Academy for closure. The school, which has been featured in the film Grown In Detroit documenting the school’s urban farm and in O: The Oprah Winfrey Magazine, boasts a 90% graduation rate and 100% college and higher education acceptance upon graduation. The award winning school is specifically for pregnant and parenting teens and their children, offering a wide range of classes and child care. It is the only school of its kind in the nation.

"The school provides pre-natal and parenting classes, and offers high school student mothers the opportunity to finish their high school education immediately after giving birth by providing on-site daycare, early childhood development services, and pre-school for their children, as well as on-site medical, dental and social services, so the young women don't have to miss school to attend appointments. What also makes CFA unique is its organic garden and farm with chickens, goats and a horse, which the students maintain as part of their science education."

More on the arrests from an earlier article:

Protesters Arrested at DPS' Catherine Ferguson Academy

Some struggled, some screamed, all were put in squad cars and hauled away.

"To go in like storm troopers to arrest people who were carrying on a peaceful protest during spring break to preserve their school was just absolutely outrageous," Driver said.

At least a dozen people were arrested, including two moms who had their small kids with them.

Baldwin's three-year-old daughter was there, and she says she would do it all again if it meant saving the school that helped save her.

"I'm glad I took part in this. I'd do it a hundred times more to help the cause," she said.

They were ticketed and let go. There was a DPS spokesperson at the scene. He said that "they understand that a school can mean so much to students, parents and teachers, but that a protest is not the way to go about trying to get your message heard. Instead, they are encouraged to talk to Robert Bobb and show that their school needs to stay open."

Talk to Robert Bobb? Really. They had been trying. I doubt he would listen at all. He is one of the Broad Academy fellows who are famous for not caring for the feelings of teachers. Here is his page at the Broad Institute.

In fact Bobb is the one who walked out of his own town hall meeting when parents started speaking out.

Detroit's Robert Bobb left his own town hall meeting very upset. Cancelled later meeting.

During a contentious meeting interrupted by chants and catcalls Tuesday, students, parents and teachers lambasted a plan to close 14 Detroit schools and convert 45 others to charter schools.-- Detroit News

According to a report I got today from community activists in BAMN, "angry parents, students, teachers, and BAMN civil rights activists left Detroit schools Emergency Manager Robert Bobb stammering, shaking, and fleeing his "town hall" meeting" last night. He also canceled a second meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. this evening at Cody H.S.

In this school teen parents had someone to take care of their kids, and even more. Here is an interesting post in the comment section...seems a real shame to close such a school.

This school has a 90% graduation rate with 100% of graduating students going onto either 2 or 4-year colleges. This school also has a HUGE farm with honey bees, horses, chickens, turkeys and a garden. The only thing people are looking at is the "teen mom" thing. They are defending the only school willing to take care of them AND their children. What is going to happen to these students if the school closes?

Discuss (28 comments) | Recommend (+51 votes)

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

Someone should go viral with a cartoon of the Governor with Mousolinni telling him "Great job, you have done in Benton Harbor what I did in Italy in 1938, eliminate the duly elected legislature and replace it with a representitive of business". or a better, more concise way of saying it.

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

Does anyone know where you can file a formal complaint with the State against caregivers?

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

To Michigan Messenger Reporters , Editors and Publishers.....Several years ago, the then Dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences at Indiana University, Blaise Cronin, wrote an article that compared Gresham's Law ( economics) with the Blogosphere .....still available online, it is , at once, a humorous and thought- commentary on the deteriorating state of the blogosphere....As I refer to Dr Cronin's words often as I contribute my own logorrhea to the "podium ' represented by the blogosphere, it pleases me to see a level of civility present in the comments made by your readership., proving that , not all public media, has been corrupted by the "uncouth, hapless souls" referred to by Dr Cronin...Check out his comments: I think you might enjopy reading them......"Gresham's Law and The Blogosphere."..Blaise Cronin SLIS Indiana University

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

REINSTATE DON'T ASK DON'T TELL

Now, for the so-called Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal.
Once enacted early next year homosexuals will now be able to serve openly in the US armed forces. The traditional media in the state blast wave reported this story (all based upon a single AP article) and focused solely upon the creation of jobs. You raised the issues of low paid, minimally trained private corrections officers. Lake County, one of the poorest in the state, certainly can use any economic benefit. As a poor county it has limited law enforcement resources, 12 deputy sheriffs and no State Police Post. Court resources are also limited, just the elected prosecutor. How are issues at the facility to be dealt with, assualts, escapes, even riot? What does "mid-level" inmate mean, Level II and III under the California code or also Level IV?

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

Eartha, enjoyed your report on the private GEO prison in Lake County. The traditional media in the state wave blasted the news (all based on an AP article) and focused almost solely on the issue of job creation. You are the first to raise other issues. Lake County, one of the poorest in the state, certainly can use the economic benefit, but there are security issues. The county police force consists of 12 personal in the sheriff's department and two state troopers. There is no state police post in the county. There is only one prosecutor in the county, no asistants. Who will respond to problems at the prison, assaults, escape, riot? What does "mid-level" prisoners mean? Level II and III under the California code or does this mean we will have Level IV inmates? A host of issues remain unexplored by the traditional media.

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

Let me introduce you to another fine example of christian stewardship: fracking.
Hydraulic fracturing is used to harvest natural gas. A water/chemical solution is pumped into shale formations at high pressure shattering the rock structures, freeing the gas to be pumped back to the surface. Recently companies like Encana Corporation, which has leased 250,000 acres of State & private land in Michigan, have found that by drilling much deeper vertically and then drilling several thousand additional feet horizontally while using far more chemicals and water, they can unleash gas that previously was not harvestable. Michigan's Collingwood shale formation, which lies over two miles below the surface, is now on their radar. Last winter Encana drilled their first test wells near Lake City.
This new technique has been linked to the contamination of wells and underground aquifers in Michigan & other States. Residents of Dimock, Pennslyvania had their aquifer contaminated by Cabot Oil & Gas company. Now residents have to use bottled water or expensive reverse osmosis & carbon filters on their taps. Encana leaked benzene into West Divide Creek in Colorado & was fined $371,000 for their actions. The company is making so much money they write fines off as a cost of doing business. New York State has wisely imposed a moratorium on fracking until State officials can examine the process. Since there is an auction of an additional 452,000 acres of State land scheduled for the end of October, Michigan should quickly do likewise.
One huge issue is that companies are not required to disclose what chemicals they use. This leaves the general public & landowners who lease their land ignorant of potential problems while hampering State & Federal officials in case of an emergency. Our State Representatives should immediately introduce a bill requiring full disclosure before wells can be drilled in Michigan. I remind you that we have no technology that can purify a contaminated underground reservoir. A technological problem for which there is no solution is a technology that should not be used. I hope hunter's and fishermen in this State will contact their elected officials and oppose fracking. While people can use bottled water or filters, the deer & turkey & trout have no such options.
Destroying common resources that all beings depend on is the ancient definition of terrorism. In pre-christian Europe, anyone guilty of poisoning a well or spring was killed. Maybe we need to make corporate CEO's personally responsible for company actions and employ the old penalty. The Christians mouth the word life, but they destroy the very substance life is based on: water. It is time we rejected the perverse morality of Jesus Christ that is destroying the Earth.

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

I am trying to find a video that was posted on youtube of Bob Genetski and Dar Vander Ark endorsing Mike Bishop for attorney general. It doesn't appear safe to me. Here's what I found;

According to the Massachusetts Energy Alliance (www.massenvironmentalenergy...), biomass energy production produces the same amount of particulate as coal and 50% more carbon dioxide & carbon monoxide. Biomass carbon dioxide emissions are not regulated by HR 2454. It would take more than 25 years before a logged forest could sequester near the amount of carbon removed, likely many more years. Biomass power would not be carbon neutral for a long time and certainly not when we need it most.

According to Patricia Thornley, University of Manchester 70% of particulate pollution from a Biomass plant is generated by the diesel equipment that harvests & processes the material. If true, biomass gasification wouldn’t reduce particulate pollution much relative to conventional burning.

For every 10 micrograms per cubic meter increase of fine particulate there will be a 4% increase in deaths by any cause, 6% increase in Cardiopulmonary deaths and 8% increase in lung cancer deaths per Pope et al study published in JAMA http://www.healtheffects.org/ (see study 140)

In my estimation our area currently has a particulate pollution level of about 15 micrograms per cubic meter based on history and nearby monitoring information from the nearest current monitoring stations in Escanaba & Muskegon. Unfortunately we don’t really know as there is no local air quality monitoring station.

So if a local biomass plant added 10 micrograms per cubic meter of particulate to Grand Traverse county air we could calculate the corresponding added mortality;

The following example is based on 1997 deaths of women in GT county (more current data could be used but this is what I found for example purposes)

195 - heart disease x .06 = 11.7
58 - lung cancer x .08 = 4.6
151 - all other x .04 = 6

total = 22 added female annual deaths per 10 micrograms per cubic meter added particulate.
Some studies suggest a slightly smaller death rate for men.

There would also be additional hospital admissions, childhood asthma, & lower quality of life for many. This direct relationship to health effects & particulate has been verified in many studies starting with the Harvard six city study beginning in 1976. This direct relationship to particulate pollution holds for coal, wood & diesel particulate. There is no safe level of particulate pollution. Health effects are measured at very low levels.

I would like to see us use this opportunity to engineer combustion out of our energy needs as much as possible.

Re: Contact Michigan Messenger

The given contact is very useful.
