The Michigan Messenger: Public land vs. private golf

  • Joe · 1 year ago
The golf course will be a public course, so the title of your article is misleading. The park land to be used for 3 holes is east of the sand dunes and does not touch the beach front. The land will be leased from the city of BH and the annual maintenance of the park will be paid for by the golf course. The land being used will be replaced with even more land expanding the park from it's present size and it will all be connected with new nature trails. The current unused parking lot east of the sand dunes will be relocated to the original boulevard configuration making it both safer and more convenient for families to access the beach. This is a very good thing and will benefit the city of BH and the area for decades to come.

It's public land. It's belongs to everyone in Michigan. Not just golfers. That it is a "public" course is no comfort to the mostly African-American community that makes up BH and DOES NOT GOLF. Nor is it comfort to anyone else who doesn't golf, but who wants access to the water.

This was a spot to be preserved in perpetuity. Why does that change suddenly when Whirlpool and developers show up with a sack of money and public relations professionals?

It's undemocratic. And not in the interest of anyone except special interests who think they can turn a buck.
